Health Law

The Institute of Health Law Studies was ready to go on October 20th before the ink had time to dry on the daily newspaper.  They picked up 200 papers at the local distribution center for Kids’ News Day and set out before sunlight to sell them on the corners of 3rd and Cedar Street downtown.

With the assistance of several law students from California Western School of Law, Pam Tait, the Program Administrator stood with bundles of freshly printed papers on the street and began selling the papers for $1 each and any additional donation. Today’s paper was a special edition of the Union Tribune that featured the advances being made and lives being changed at Radys Children’s Hospital here in San Diego.

IHLS realizes the need to service the underserved children community here in San Diego and today was a great way to make a difference in over 143, 000 children in need each year.  Through our paper selling efforts today, IHLS was able to raise $382 towards the need for better healthcare for our own San Diego community.  We were very honored to stand out on the streets today to bring awareness to the public that you can make a difference in someone’s life just by making a small donation.  Thank you San Diego, you are all heroes for the day!!!

October 8, 2009, IHLS reached the maximum group level possible here in San Diego, “Life Level Four Member”.  This has been accomplished with the assistance of our student organization The Health Law Society officers, CWSL faculty and CWSL students.  Without your wonderful donations, our four blood drives this year would never have been so successful, thank you!

Everyone one of you have saved someone’s life and are true heroes in our community.

October 3, 2009, The IHLS Whale Walkers raised almost $700 to help sick children in our San Diego community.  With our Shamu & You team t-shirts, our team was one of the 157 teams that walked this day.  There were over 137 volunteers and all together we raised over $250,000.  All of this funding will help support the life-saving efforts at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

September 23, 2009 was a night to celebrate all the outstanding fund raisers for the children here in San Diego. IHLS  attended the Rady Children’s Hospital Miracle Maker Celebration at Humphrey’s by the Bay.

Through endless hours of fund raising and volunteering, IHLS has reached the status as a Miracle Maker with Rady Children’s Hospital.  As a Miracle Maker, IHLS enhances hospital morale, increases corporate and community awareness and enriches the lives of sick children. IHLS has built a healthy partnership for CWSL and Rady Children’s Hospital.

On September 12, 2009 as the San Diego temperatures reached the 3-digit numbers, IHLS was out on the Steel Canyon Golf Course in Jamul.

There were 144 players in a four man scramble format that beared the heat as IHLS provided them liquids to keep hydrated and found them shade as they waited for their teams to tee off.

It was on hole number 6 that IHLS had to watch for hole in one winners.  If any team member was able to make the hole in one on this tee, then they went home with a Harley Davidson soft tail motorcycle donated by the courtesy of Harley Davidson.   As the hours moved on in the day, the heat reached 103 degrees but IHLS managed to keep the players hydrated and moving along the course.

Unfortunately, not one player made the hole in one shot but many were close.  It was a very long day but the hard efforts at the tees brought in great funding for the hospital.

All proceeds towards the tournament went to help the kids here in our San Diego community through the Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation.

On August 20th as 108 golf participants arrived at The Riverwalk Golf Club to support a fundraiser event for the Children’s Hospital Cancer Care Center, IHLS was there to check them in. As each team registered, IHLS coordinated their team foursome for a photo and matched them up to their labeled golf cart.  It was a beautiful summer day in San Diego for all that attended.

This was the 6th Annual 2009 Dale Donnelly Memorial Golf Tournament that helps to “restore, sustain and enhance the health and development potential of children” here in San Diego. The past five tournaments have raised over $60,000 for this worthy cause.

Due to the third successful goal reaching blood drive held on July 14, 2009, IHLS was recognized by the San Diego Blood Bank as a “Life Level Three Member”.  This is a community service title provided to local San Diego groups that set out each year with a projected goal at the beginning of the year and it must be met each time.  IHLS collaborates with its student organization The Health Law Society each quarter to conduct an on campus blood drive.  Each drive there is a set minimum goal that must be attained before a group can qualify at each level.  The highest level to achieve is Life Level Four Member which IHLS will be seeking at our next blood drive on October 8, 2009.

IHLS wishes to thank all faculty, staff and students that donate their blood.  Without your passion to assist people in need, we would not have been able to make this such a success.  You are all true heroes and have made a life difference to someone in our own community.  Thank you all!  Please check out our online recognition on www.sandiegobloodbank.org.

July 14,2009.  Due to the increased need for blood, the Institute of Health Law Studies and the CWSL student organization, The Health Law Society will conduct its third blood drive this year.  The blood drive is supported by donors from the CWSL community as well as local residents.  All donations benefit the San Diego Blood Bank and patients in the San Diego area.

July 1, 2009.  The Erizen Sei Bowles “Feed A Friend” project is an annual food drive organized by the Institute of Health Law Studies, in collaboration with the San Diego Alpha Project for the homeless.  This event is hosted for the entire month of July in order to collect non-perishable food items to replenish the food pantry for our San Diego homeless community.

June 24, 2009.  IHLS Executive Director Professor Bryan A. Liang and CWSL Alumni Arlene Luu, of The Doctor’s Company, presented information about signs and symptoms of elder abuse, and potential legal and policy concerns for nurses involved in senior care.  Attending the seminar were 32 CNA’s from the school and the event was funded by the  CWSL student organization, The Health Law Society.  Professor Liang and Ms. Luu have a very broad base in elder care issues.  They have published articles on improving qualtiy and safety in health care for the senior population. Professor Liang serves on the Board of Directors of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.
