SAVE THE DATES AND TIMES!

These luncheons are VERY important events for you.  You will obtain the basic information you need as members of your Section to understand the resources you must access in Career Services in order to be knowledgeable about the job market and the steps you need to take to be prepared and competitive.  As a second semester first year student, it is critical that you familiarize yourself with the expectations of the market in terms of law clerk positions which are the necessary precursors to your first job after law school.

If you are interested in applying for a Judicial Externship for Fall 2012, the last day to upload application materials in Symplicity for selected judges is Friday, May 18, 2012 at noon.  If you haven’t done so already, please contact Jocelyn in the Career Services office and she can help you put your application materials together, including your cover letter, resume, transcript and writing sample.

Frequently asked questions:

**What if I am not on Law Review?  Yes, some judges prefer Law Review, but it is not a requirement.  Indeed, there are other experiences and achievements that you can highlight that will grab the judge’s attention, such as unique work experience, strong research and writing skills, oral advocacy awards, or a well written cover letter.

**What if my grades are not that great?  Again, some judges prefer students who are in the top of their class, but some judges look at the overall application rather than grades alone.

**How will a judicial externship affect my future employment prospects?  These positions are worth pursuing because a judicial externship will enhance your marketability, no matter which field of law you wish to enter.  The benefits of working with a judge include the opportunity to develop stronger research and writing skills, attend court proceedings, and observe how courts decide cases.

**I want to apply, but where do I begin?  If you are interested in applying, do not delay, take these steps today:

 1.  Conduct research on the judges who have job postings on Symplicity.  For example, look the judges up on judgepedia.com, and do a google search.

 2.  Draft a cover letter that highlights your strengths and shows genuine interest in working with the particular judge.  Send the cover letter to Jocelyn in a word document, so that she can review and give you feedback.

 3.  Update and double-check the contents of your resume.

 4.  Order your transcript from the Registrar.

 5.  Clean up your writing sample.

 6.  Carefully follow the directions on Symplicity and upload all materials by noon on Friday, May 18, 2012.
