Have you ever heard of Sojourner Truth?  She was a most remarkable woman born into slavery in 1799.  She was emancipated under New York law in 1827, but not before her son was illegally sold into perpetual slavery in Alabama.  Many women of her time would have sat back and accepted this as their lot, but not Sojourner.  She went to court and successfully sued for her son’s return!  She later became an abolitionist speaker and writer calling such people as Harriet Beecher Stowe and Abraham Lincoln as her acquaintances.  There is much more to her story which can be read at American National Biography Online
