This program will focus on the philosophical assumptions of surrogate decision making for mentally incapacitated individuals, particularly in the context of end-of-life choices.

The following topics will be addressed:
• What constitutes incapacity to make medical decisions?
• How is incapacity to make medical decisions assessed in practice?
• When is a surrogate decision maker needed?
• Inter-disciplinary team decision making (bioethics committees) in long term care facilities
